Ladybird Musings

Why is it that we don't seem to fear the ladybird in quite the same way as other insects?

Is it her size?  It is her beautiful cherry red color that makes us smile or the polka dots worn as a protective cloak rather than a fashion statement?

I wonder if she knows she has just a year to live (two if she's extremely lucky)?  Maybe that's why she eats so voraciously.

    1. Thanks Kathryn, I love it when they unfold their wings and fly.

  2. An excellent question - I think it is those friendly polka-dots and the fact that she doesn't sting or bite. Amazing macro.

  4. I love this photograph. Ladybugs have always been my favorite. I think it's the color, the delicacy, the wings. They are also great helpers in the garden, eating up the aphids and such.

  5. It is funny, that certain insects, ladybugs, dragonflies, butterflies, we see as beautiful or cute and the rest as such a nuisance.

Ladybugs are good for your garden though, they eat the aphids that like to eat plants... so they get an extra vote for that! Great photo!

  7. Beautiful shot! I remember the beginnings of a childhood chant: ladybug, ladybug, fly away home...your house is on fire, your children alone! Kind of morbid! But she's beautiful, isn't she? Maybe we love her since she doesn't bite us!
